Gold Race Grid Banner - Wednesday, November 03, 2004 @ 23:34:03 PST - Ray Debs
Just a note about the picture that now appears at the top of the website. If you would like to see a larger version, just click on it, then you can scroll through the whole starting grid. I videotaped the 2004 IF1 Gold Race, and before the start, I had panned down the starting grid. I used some software that paints a still image from a series of video frames to generate this interesting picture. Enjoy!

Reno 2004 Qualifying and Early Results - Wednesday, September 15, 2004 @ 19:56:20 PST - Ray Debs
As promised, here is an in-the-field update on the 2004 Reno Air Races IF1 Class.
The week started out great with a lot of crews ready for the Technical Inspection Crew, making their jobs a little easier. Most of the planes were tech'd on Saturday, leaving some practice time on Sunday. This year RARA has cut the number of races for IF1 to 8 (from 9 last year), so in order to make up for the loss of a Bronze heat race, everyone unanimously voted to squeeze all the qualifications into 2 days (Monday and Tuesday), and hold the Bronze Heat race on Wednesday morning. This way, the Bronze teams still get the same number of races. This worked out really well with everyone getting their quals done, and after the heat race, the rest of the IF1 time was an open practice session.
We have 21 qualifying teams, (leaving 5 planes in the first Bronze Heat) which I list in my next news posting. This year, there are a couple of new major sponsors, Red Bull, and Castrol Oil. Both of these are really exciting sponsorships, and bring samples and lots of cash (for RARA). The weather has been really nice after the first day warnings about high winds. Hopefully it will last through the weekend.
Check back soon to see the rest of the results.

Reno Air Races 2004 - Thursday, September 09, 2004 @ 17:16:51 PST - Ray Debs
It is now one week before the start of the air races in Reno, and I am about to head off for the week of technical inspections and qualifying. In the past, it has taken quite a while to get the results posted on this website. This year, since I am not flying, I will post the results as they are available (almost real-time). I will also try to do a little commentary and profile some of the newer pilots. So check back often to follow along with the exciting week ahead.
I look forward to seeing everyone in Reno!!

A New Crop Of Racers - 2003 Pylon Racing School - Friday, July 18, 2003 @ 22:52:50 PST - Gary Dalleske
PRS 2003 Photos
A New Crop Of Racers - 2003 Pylon Racing School By Gary Dalleske
On a beautiful and sunny June weekend at Stead, with light winds in the morning and temperatures in the 80's, David Hoover in his awesome Christen Eagle and Scotty Crandlemire in his spotless RV4 turned out another finely trained group of Formula One pylon air racers. Six new pilots with widely varied backgrounds have joined the IF1 family and five of our new pilots plan on participating in this year's races. In addition, Birch Entriken, who hangars his clean #50, "Scarlet Screamer" at Stead, also participated in the PRS just to get a little time on the course and was turning some pretty hot laps.
Maynard Crosby, a retired big band leader, who hails from Granite Falls, WA, will be bringin his Jim Miller creation, #14 "Pushy Cat" to Reno in September. Maynard, who has been flying for more than 50 years, has been involved in many facets of aviation including, owning a flight school, performing aerobatics, aircraft sales and aircraft modifications, has some significant landing gear work to do on "Pushy Cat" and hopes to have the work completed before September.
Steve Dari, a business consultant from San Diego, CA will be bringin his Cassutt IIIM "Redhead". Steve has been flying since he turned 16, and became interested in air racing after reading and air racing article written by Biplane Champion David Rose's mechanic, Eric Hereth. Living in San Diego, Steve also met Charlie Greer along the way and the rest is history.
Pat Gleason, who recently purchased Kevin Kelly's award winning #42, "Barbara Jean II", also participated but will not attend Reno this year as a participant as he is in the middle of rebuilding the engine and doesn't want to rush it. Pat is an ironworker from Half Moon Bay, CA , and has also worked as a traffic-reporting pilot.
Daniel Marcotte, a welder from Bakersfield, VT, will be bringin his recently purchased Cassutt IIIM to Reno in September. Daniel began his flying career flying ultralights and went on to acquire his pilot's license in 1992. Daniel has not yet named his airplane.
Scott Thomas, from Sacramento, CA, will be bringing his yet to be named Casssutt IIIM to Reno in September. Scott, currently employed as a fire attack pilot had his first flight with his father in a 172 when he was 7 years old. Since then, Scott has gone on to fly Beaver float planes in Alaska for six years, Airtaxi to the Bahamas, air cargo from Key West to Honduras, and he has also flown in Peru and Chile. Scott has always wanted to be a participant in the Reno Air Races.
Our last rookie PRS participant was R.G. "Smokey" Young, who will be arriving in September with his #77 Cassutt IIIM "Zarrina" that he recently purchased from Tim Bovee. Smokey is the only rookie pilot to bring his airplane to Reno this year and is the only rookie pilot fully qualified to race at Reno in September. Smokey, a USAF graduate, turned airline piot is domiciled in Chicago and calls Franklin, TN, home. He hangars his "new" Cassutt with "Midnight Oil" in the Wrights' hangar in Auburn, CA. Smokey flew F-111's in the USAF and since then has flown 727's, 37's and 57's for ATA.
We want to give a warm welcome to our new IF1 race pilots and hope they will enjoy their participation in this year's competition and in the future.
IF1Air Racing At Aviation Nation Air Show, Las Vegas! - Thursday, April 17, 2003 @ 11:44:37 PST - Scotty Crandlemire
Formula One Air Racing comes to Aviation Nation Air Show November 15-16. World of Wings CEO and President, Bob Avery chooses the Formula One Air Racing Class to perform demo racing at Nellis AFB, Nevada for the anticipated “huge” crowds. The Formula’s were invited due to their unique, diverse designs. These aircraft are small, very high performance racing machines. They are the “Fastest 4 cylinders in the World”. Approaching speeds near 300 mph in the straight away on a closed 6 pylon course measuring 3.1 miles in length. These racers are turning upwards of 4,000 + RPM’s and average 4.5 “G’s” and can see loads upwards of 8+ “G’s”. This is a highly competitive race class employing state of the art aeronautical design and technology. The Formula’s will have an “Open Pit” area welcoming the crowds to look over the aircraft, meet the pilots and their crews. “We look forward to seeing you in November!” says one of the organizers of this Formula One event, Vice President Scotty Crandlemire. Be sure to come see the Formulas at this awesome event coming to Las Vegas!

Air Racing Presentation for Kiwanis Club - Saturday, January 18, 2003 @ 23:04:33 PST - Ray Debs
Sam Kahn (my step-father and an Aerophile Racing Team Member) is a member of the Kiwanis Club, and invited me to talk to them about the races this year. It was quite an honor to be asked, and I couldn't pass up such a great opportunity to play Aviation Ambassador. There were about 25 people who showed up at 7AM that morning at the IHOP for their meeting. The speech was a great success with people asking all kinds of questions and being really interested. I spoke for about a half hour on Air Racing, International Formula One, Aerophile Racing Team, this year's Reno Air Races, and a little about how Curtis and I got into this. After the meeting, many people came up and shook my hand, expressing their gratitude for me sharing, and asking more questions. I had some pictures my mom had taken at the Air Races which I passed around so people could see what our plane really looked like. All in all, it was great, and I look forward to doing it again whenever I get the chance to share our experiences and excitement about Air Racing.
The PowerPoint presentation is available for anyone who would like to see it as an example if you would like to do your own.

New IF1 Logo! - Wednesday, September 25, 2002 @ 14:21:04 PST - Ray Debs
The winner of the IF1 Logo Contest did a great job in designing a new logo for us, and won a trip to the 2002 Reno Air Races. Congratulations Olivia, and Thank You Very Much! We will be hearing more about her trip in the near future. The website is now sporting the fresh new logo and I'll be carrying that theme through more of the site soon. Anita Infante was selling Polo and T-shirts with the new logo, and they were a BIG hit. She just about sold out. We will be ordering more and make them available on the website soon, in case you would like to build a new wardrobe.
Results for Reno 2002 Formula One Posted! - Wednesday, September 25, 2002 @ 14:15:18 PST - Ray Debs
A big "Thank you" goes to Anders Bruun for taking up the slack and posting the results in the IF1 Community Forum! I have taken his postings and put them on the results page here: http://www.if1airracing.com/reno_2002.shtml . If you spot an error, please let me know. It is easy for me to edit these tables, so don't hesitate. I am using the information from Anders because I haven't got anything from the "official" channels yet. Hopefully that will be coming soon. Also, I have put the 2000 results and a space for the 2001 qual times in the same page. Let me know if you like this format.

Community Forum Temporarily Unavailable - Monday, March 04, 2002 @ 11:02:11 PST - Ray Debs
Evidently someone broke into Bravenet's systems, so they decided it would be better to shut down until they can guarantee the security of their systems before coming back online. I don't know how long it will be down, but hopefully not more than a couple of days. In the meantime, please send any suggestions or requests to me at ray@aerophile.org, and I'll post any important items. Thank you for your patience.
IF1 Air Racing Seeks New Logo - Tuesday, February 26, 2002 @ 15:07:41 PST - Ray Debs
International Formula One Pylon Air Racing is looking for a new logo design and is initiating a design contest to solicit concepts. According to IF1 Promotions Director, Anita Infante, “We are working to establish a new race circuit with races around the country and we want to update our identity. We are looking for a logo that reflects the energy and excitement of IF1 as the World’s Fastest Four-cylinder Motorsport”.
IF1 began racing in 1947 and is the oldest, continuously active, air racing class in the United States. The stringent regulation “or formula” that dictates the racing guidelines of the class have remained unchanged for over 50 years. This constant baseline means that today’s competitors can measure their success against the champions from decades past. Today’s champions have to race more than 50 miles per hour faster than the early racers to claim a championship title. This requires speeds of almost 250 mph in competition with seven or eight other aircraft on a racecourse just 35 feet off the ground.
David Hoover, President of Formula One Air Racing, agrees with other race pilots that, “There is nothing else like air racing.” He continues, “We want to capture that excitement in our identity. A new logo is the first step. We have used a couple of logos over the years but we want to update our look to represent the technological advances that we have made in air racing over the last decade.”
The IF1 Logo Design Contest is open to anyone. The Grand Prize to be awarded for the winning logo design includes:

Aeroshell Oil Recall - Tuesday, December 18, 2001 @ 12:50:34 PST - Ray Debs
This is from the Aeroshell website:
November 26, 2001 - Updated December 7, 2001
Equilon Lubricants LLC is the producer of Aeroshell, the world's best selling aviation piston engine oil. We take seriously the level of confidence placed on Aeroshell products by the aviation community and individual customers like you.
In this spirit we are acting quickly to voluntarily recall specified batches of products that fall below our quality standards and replace them, at no cost to you, with Aeroshell products that do meet our quality requirements.
However, a recent batch of Aeroshell product may not have met our stringent requirements. A mechanical problem in our blend plant equipment may have allowed some debris to be carried from the blend tank to our packaging equipment. While the problem has since been corrected and measures put in place to preclude this from happening in the future, the debris that did get to the packaging equipment may have allowed some Aeroshell products to fall under the desired level of internal quality control. Therefore, we are recalling specified batches of products and replacing them with Aeroshell products that do meet our quality requirements.
These measures are necessary because of the high standards we have for the Aeroshell product line and our commitment to the aviation community
Online Discussion for AeroShell Oils Recall
AeroShell will hold a moderated online discussion about its recent voluntary AeroShell Oils recall. Pilots and mechanics are encouraged to log on once the event starts and post questions to technical experts and research engineers Paul Royko and Ben Visser.
Session 2: Wednesday, December 19, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM CST

RARA update and F1 update - Tuesday, November 27, 2001 @ 20:24:35 PST - David Hoover
I recently received a letter from Mike Houghton ( Pres and CEO of RARA ) updating how things are going in Reno. He states: "RARA has been scrambling since the cancellation of the races on Sept 14th. We have been faced with a number of business challenges, the least of which has been to answer the question of whether or not we will be here in 2002. The point of my letter is to assure you that RARA WILL BE HERE IN 2002. We have offered to refund entry fees, should any pilot request them. That's running about 44% wanting their fees back. We have had a number of pilots request a refund of line passes purchased, and unused ones will be refunded at the full value paid. The latest publication from NAG, for God knows what reason, printed a purse distribution schedule for the Unlimited Class. This has created a large number of questions regarding why RARA was paying one race class and not the others. May I assure you that there has not been, and will not be, a purse distribution for the 2001 Air Races. Quite frankly, we don't have enough money to even consider that, even if we were so inclined". The rest of the letter talked about the upcoming Presidents meeting in March. F1 NEWS: Anita recently met with potential race organizers in Chandler, AZ. They are interested in hosting an F1 race next year. Possibly in conjunction with the Copper State Fly- In. I'll post updates concerning any information about this when I hear about it. We have also been contacted by the organizers of the Deke Slayton Airshow about having a race there as well. Again no full details yet. I have been contacted by another group in New Mexico that may want to host a race next year in August. Two other current Airshow events have requested information about F1 races for the 2003 race season. I'll try and post any updates about races or other issues on the website when I get them. Please contact me if you have any specific question or suggestions. David Hoover

Now Pilots Can Update Biographies Online! - Monday, November 05, 2001 @ 01:56:02 PST - Ray
Announcing a great new feature which allows a Pilot's Biography to be updated online without the intervention of the webmaster. You can see what it looks like by clicking on the "Edit Page" link at the bottom of a Pilot's biography (for instance on Ray Cote's Bio). If you would like to update your biography, just send me email and request a password. If you have updated something and need help formatting, I will be happy to help. I hope you all use this to keep your bios updated often.
Go get'em!
Auburn Fly-in - Thursday, November 01, 2001 @ 09:08:20 PST - Will Dennis
Ray and all: We had a great time at the flyin. My flight over in Fool's Gold was great because I've finally got the trim right! Two others from Willits joined in - my crew chief, Mike Madsen (flew his Pazmany PL-2) and Glen Green (flew his C-182). I was on final back here at Willits when I heard a metallic impact on my floorboard - something had fallen. Landed uneventful but when I looked down my fued petcock handle and the retaining screw were laying on the floorboard! Time for a little Loc-tite. It was a great day. David Hoover suggested we have another one in the spring. I'd like to have it here in Willits and I'll even provide a complete BBQ for all who attend. Proposed dates to follow. I have some great pictures from day and will forward them to you. If you like any of them feel free to post them here on the Website. Great job Ray. My best, Will. wvdennis@pacific.net
New IF1 Website Up And Running - Wednesday, October 31, 2001 @ 16:38:02 PDT - Ray
Welcome to the new International Formula One Website!
I am really honored to have been asked to work on this, and will do my best to make this one of the best air-racing websites. A couple of new features have been added for the roll-out. The first is the News section. You will see IF1 and related news items here so check it often to make sure you don't miss anything. The second is a Guestbook which everyone can sign to show their support for IF1. The third is that page counters have been added to every page so we can keep track of our activity to show potential sponsors and advertizers. The fourth is the addition of the Partners In Air Racing (PIAR) banner at the bottom of most of the pages. This is an Air Racing web ring which will give IF1 more visibility as well as giving our visitors links to related sites.
I would greatly appreciate your help and suggestions for how to improve it and make it more friendly. Please feel free to contact me either through email (ray@aerophile.org), or you can call me (408)871-6848 and leave a message if I don't answer. I will be making the web maintenance more automated as I go, so it will get easier and quicker to make changes. I especially need your help to update the pilot and plane biographies and photos. If you have good pics of your plane or other planes, or changes to your bio, please send me a copy.
Come visit often to see new features as they are added. We have big plans, and hope you will follow along. You will be hearing more about the planned features in the near future. Happy Flying!
